The paper

Valentine’s Day is an old tradition thought to have originated from a Roman Festival known as Lupercalia according history .com.  This day is also called Saint Valentine’s Day or the feast of Saint Valentine and its celebrated annually on February 14. The Saint officially recognized by the Roman Catholic Church was a real person who died around AD 270.

Numerous early Christians matyrs named Valentine. The Valentine’s honoured in February 14 are valentines of Rome. Valentine of Rome was a priest in Rome who was matyred in 269 and was added to the calendar of Saints by Pope Galesius in 496 and was buried on the via Flamina. The Dictionary of Christian Christianity , writes that Saint Valentine was a priest imprisoned for succouring persecuted Christians.

Why was he put to death?

Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men, Valentine realizing the injustice of the decree defied Claudius  and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions was discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.

Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons where they were often beaten and tortured.

Why is celebrated on February 14?

Some believe that Valentine’s Day is celebrated mid-February to mark the anniversary of Saint Valentine’s death. Original Saint Valentine was likely tortured and beheaded on February 14th, his sacrifice for the Christian faith has become the world Valentine’s Day..

Feast day of Saint Valentine, the celebration of love and affection. Its a period to exchange cards, candy, gifts or flowers with their special Valentine. The day of romance we call valentine’s day is named for a Christian matyr and dates back to the 5th century, but has origin in the Roman history Lupercalia.

Connection with romantic love

There is no evidence of any link between Saint Valentine’s Day and the rites by the ancient Roman festival Lupercalia, despite many claims by many author. The celebration of Saint Valentine did not have any romantic connotations until Chaucer’s poetry about valentine. on the 14th century. Popular modern sources claim links to unspecified Greco-Roman February holidays alleged to be devoted to fertility and love to Saint Valentine’s Day but prior to Chaucer in the 14th century there were no links between the saints named valentine and romantic love.

Also, the dates do not fit because at the time of Gelasius, the feast was only celebrated in Jerusalem. In Ancient Rome, Lupercalia observed Feb 13 – 15 was an arhaiac rite connected to fertility. Lupercalia was a festival local to the city of Rome.

The position of this paper is that the society has lost the real meaning of the celebration of Saint Valentine’s Day. The day was set apart to celebrate the heroic achievement of Saint Valentine who attempted to correct the injustice of the Emperor ruling in his day. The day could have been better celebrated to applaud the laudable and heroic achievement of people who stand against injustice in our society. This is a great challenge to people of likeminded to stand against brutality and injustice in our society. For instance, people like Nelson Mandela of South Africa are worthy of emulation and celebration. In view of this discovered fact about Valentine’s Day, there is need for people most especially the youths of nowadays that are wrongfully celebrating the day to reconsider their stand in respect of Valentine’s day celebration and embrace a godly attitude, selfless and courageous stand against injustice in our society.
